Techniques Explained:

Handloom
Handloom rugs are unique and can adorn any setting effortlessly. To create these exclusive handloom rugs, there are two sets of intersecting threads, a warp which is placed on the loom tightly. The process also involves a weft along with a shuttle that is thrown across the warp threads. Once the weaving of handloom rugs is completed, a backing made of synthetic latex material is attached to the rug which leaves no scope of yarns unravelling. This is done to strengthen the carpet. The entire process in action is an interesting watch, the focus and care of the artist to the sheer patience required to create the design. Hand Tufted
In Hand-Tufted rugs, wool threads are placed on a canvas on a frame with a tool to be operated manually by hand, a pattern is to be embossed on the rug, wax paper with the design imprinted on it is used to sketch an outline. The tufting process is performed over the pattern by the artisans. The other side of the rug is then covered with latex glue to hold the backing canvas. To give the final finishing, the unkempt rug loops are shaved or woven together beautifully to add on to the pattern.
Textured Flat-Woven
The weaving process of flat woven textured rugs is instrumental in determining the quality of the rug. The texture of these rugs is dependent on the number of knots per square inch. They can be categorized as Panja Loom and Pit Loom.
Panja Looms create intricate patterns and rugs with dense quality. A comb is used to beat the wefts. After each row of knots is completed, the loose ends of the yarn are cut off with a pair of scissors. Later, the rug pile is shaved with special knives to ease out the surface and give a polished look to the rug. Panja Loom consists of a pit where pedals are placed. These pedals are operated by artisans to create dhurrie rugs. The process gets its name from the pit below the loom which is used to accumulate the material that is shredded off the rug. The warps are held in place by maintaining optimum tensile strength between the beams of the loom.
Jacquard Woven
Jacquard refers to a specially woven fabric which is made using a Jacquard loom using different materials like Silk, Cotton, Polyester, etc. Sometimes, a Jacquard woven rug also features a raised pattern like Brocade or Matelasse. The term Jacquard refers to the way the pattern is woven on the rug.
Knotted
Hand-Knotted rugs are made on a specialized vertical frame loom. The creating of handloom rugs dates back to a thousand years. Featuring some of the best designs and color variations, these rugs are very popular. The quality of these rugs is dependent on the size of the wool threads, the type and strength of knots made. These rugs also called Oriental Rugs sometimes take months to get ready because of the finesse and skill required to make them.
Knitted
Knitted carpets have an aesthetic edge over other types of carpets. The varied textures of knitted carpets are made for the modern-day interiors. The simplistic and organized designs featuring clean lines are extremely elegant and sophisticated. The geometric look of the cable knit rugs with consistent patterns brings charm to a setting.
Leather Patchwork
One of the most decorative sewing techniques is Leather Patchwork. It involves cutting of different patches from the raw leather as per the required shape and design of the rug. These patches are then sewn together to form an intriguing pattern. Leather Patchwork rugs’ history can be traced back to early China and Egypt. It has been in trend for quite some time now.
Outdoor
Outdoor rugs must be durable and sturdy. They are made with materials like Polypropylene and PET which makes them stain-resistant and easy to clean. Made to withstand harsh weather conditions, they are the best rugs for outdoor purposes like picnics, beaches or gardens. They can also handle high moisture and heavy foot traffic.
