A carpet may be a thick, woven floor cover. Carpets are made up of cotton or polyester fibres, or wool, or nylon — most frequently, these soft materials are loops or strings that form the carpet's "pile," and are attached to a solid backing. A carpet is often very densely woven and flat, or it is often tufted and thick.

What we call a carpet may be thought of as a floor cover that stretches from a wall to wall and is affixed to the ground. Rugs, tend to be smaller than the carpet and aren't affixed to the ground. They can be rolled up and moved from place to place.
